Antique Map Table & Cabinet

An Antique Map, a Hand Colored Copper Engraving, Dated 1575 is Housed in the Lid of This Belgium Antique Cabinet Table, Which was Made Sometime Prior to 1840, Evidenced by Mill Marks on the Lower Shelf of the Table.

There is a Fascinating History to This Antique Map of the Dutch Township, Namur.  Six Volumes of Copper Engravings of Hand Drawn Maps were Produced Between 1572-1619 by Braun and Hogenberg.

The Engravings were Printed, and then Hand Colored.  This Map is One of the Original Maps Contained in the “Civitates Orbis Terrarum” Volumes which Depicted the Townships and Surrounding Territory in Belgium.  The Original Artist and Cartographer of This Map was Arnoldus Masius.  His Name and Date Appear in Latin in the Lower Corner.

The Cabinet Table is Lidded and Opens to a Compartment, as Does the Door, Which is Pin-Hinged, and with Original Latch.  Hand Carved Spiral Mouldings Detail the Lid and Face of the Door.  Federalist Period

Tapered Legs and a  Metal Swag Decal Which Adorns the Front.  I would Date the Antique Cabinet Table Mid 18th  to Mid 19th c.  Wood Appears to be a Fir or Cedar. Legs May be of Heart Wood or a Hard Wood.

Condition:  Map is Over 435 Years Old, and Exhibits It’s Age with a Water Stain, Nibblings Around the Edges, Rippling, and a Fold Line.  Sprinklings of Bits of Map Paper can be Seen Under the Glass.... See Photos.  As the Table Lid was Built Around the Map, Removal of the Loose Matter Under the Glass Would Put the Map in Dire Jeopardy.  All of This, for me, Adds to the Character and the Authenticity of the Map.

The Antique Cabinet Table Frame is Tight and Stable.  Professional Restoration Has Been Performed at and to the Hinges That Hold and Connect the Framed Lid.  The Pin Hinge for the Door has been Stabilized.  Door  does Have Some Play as it is Opened and Closed, but is Secure.  The Thin Wood Shelf Dividing the Compartments has a Cut-out Section at the Back Corner.  I am in Search for a Reason for This Cut-out.

An Old Piece with Much History and Character.  For Further Information, Please Contact me.
